Girls Winter Weekend Getaway

Karen Michelle - Girls Winter Getaway

Sometimes you just need getaway with your best friends
and enjoy a long weekend doing pretty much, nothing.

We drove north for 2 hours to this beautiful lakefront chalet in Brechin.
It had just snowed and everything was perfectly covered in white,
making for the most picturesque weekend.

 With floor to ceiling windows,
I watched the sun rise every morning
(because I was always somehow the first one up)
with nothing to obstruct my view.
I loved it.

After walking on water (true story) in my winter faves
(my Maje coat, Cougar boots, Nike tights and Toque from HMP boutique)
and exploring the lake,
the girls came out and joined me

We spent the weekend eating, drinking, talking,
relaxing, playing games like Speak Out
(I spent more time laughing than speaking, or attempting to),
playing in the snow -there were at least 3 snowball fights,
and laughing so hard it hurt.

Spending time with them brought me back to me
and gave me abs (from non-stop laughing)

If you’re looking for a mini getaway
a winter chalet is so much fun!

Have you been to a chalet before?
If so, did you just stay in or did you venture out?

Leave me a comment and let me know!

Time

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16'

With the speed at which everything happens today
we are often side tracked from things
that REALLY matter to us

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16'

While celebrating the birthday of someone extremely
special to me, the conversation of time came up.

One of our friends said, that his relationship to time
had changed and how much more important it has become.

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16'

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16'

The subject of time brought me back to
my trip to Portugal this past summer.

A trip that took me on the most emotional
rollercoaster I had ever been on and one that
left me changed forever.

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16'

Looking back and reflecting on that trip today,
I realize that I was given the gift of time
and now, thinking about that conversation we had over dinner
I am reminded of just how important that time was.

So for those of you
(both known and unknown)
who have given me their time,
their attention and love,
Thank You.

Happy Thanksgiving

Architecture: #IHaveThisThingWithDoors

KARENMICHELLE- ARCHITECTURE - PORTUGAL 16'

If you don’t already know, #Ihavethisthingwithdoors
and while I was away, my eyes were flooded
with colour, character and style
that I have been searching for since leaving.

Portugal is THE oldest country in Europe so it’s
no surprise that it boasts some of the
worlds most beautiful architecture.

Here are some of the doorways I fell in love with
in the Algarve and Porto

KARENMICHELLE- BLUES || PORTUGAL 16'

Portugal is one of the top travel destinations in the world
and after having gone to the Algarve
and Porto with my family,
I still come back here-
My grandparents’ home town- Aguçadoura.

This freestanding wall
(literally next door to my grandmothers house)
is the facade of a church (igreja velha)
that once stood here
and I love it.

KARENMICHELLE- BLUES || PORTUGAL 16'

After spending the afternoon with my grandmother a few days ago,
I spent some time here wearing one of
my favourite dresses and these AMAZING
new sandals I found here!

I walked into the boutique one afternoon
after having fallen in love with
with an outfit in the window display.
When I saw these,
the outfit was forgotten and
I knew I had to have them!

They were the last pair in this colour AND size.
So, after having decided that they were already mine,
it was a bonus when the owner of the boutique
told me they were leather and handmade in Portugal!

Apart from all the amazing things summer brings,
wearing sandals and dresses is on the top of my list
for why I love summer!

How cute are they tho?
I love them!

What are your go to shoes for the summer?
Let me know in a comment below.

Summer 16: Portugal

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16' || Barracas

I’ve been coming to Portugal since I was 8 months old.

Every other summer, I spent a month here with my parents and family
going to my grandparents’ farm, picking potatoes and onions
out of the ground, hauling them (or trying) into my grandfathers pickup truck.

I woke up to my grandmother who, every morning,
bought me a basket of the freshest, ripest and yummiest peaches
I have ever had.

I would run eagerly to the back to the chicken coup
and look for eggs that my grandmother hadn’t yet taken,
because she knew how happy it made me
to run back to her with a handful of eggs and my happiness made her day.

I would take all the new born bunnies, cradle them,
wrap them in whatever I was wearing and would run
to the rooftop deck and stay there with them.
She would eventually find me and laugh.

As the years passed, I began appreciating those small insignificant
moments all the more and Portugal, a country my parents called home
slowly became my second home.

Today, things are very different.
I came back here, after three years for a family trip I have
been planning for the past two years and I am so happy to be back.
I spent a week in the Algarve and am now in Porto to be with my grandmother.

My grandmother is older and her mind, with age,
is inevitably changed. I sat next to her yesterday and watched
as her mind drifted from remembering to questioning.

As I sat next to her, in the home she now lives in under full care and watch,
her mind drifted to things that were not real.
I wanted to remind her of things that were real and true- The amazing things
she had done, all the things I remembered and loved about her
and my summers here in Portugal.

KARENMICHELLE- PORTUGAL 16' || Peaches

I reminded her about the peaches she bought me every morning,
about the bunnies and chickens and how we prayed the rosary
after dinner every night and,
she remembered it all.

The happiness I felt and feel still
is what I came here for.
To be connected to the people
I love the most.
Her remembering, reminded me how I too,
even though many miles away,
was still a part of her and I wanted her to know that she
is still very much a part of me too.

On a trip to Portugal more than 5 years ago I had taught her
to say “I love you” at lunch one day.
I would sit next to her, always and pretended to feed
her with an airplane motion and she would just laugh.

Yesterday, not knowing if she remembered, I said in Portuguese before I left,
“Avo, I’m going to teach you something, say, ‘I love you’ (in English)” and to that
she responded, “I love you (in English), I remember that”

Yes, this post is so emotionally charged
and I didn’t plan it this way
but this is how things go.
That moment, and ones like it
are the moments that matter to me,
that shape me,
that make me happy and
make me the woman I am.

I am so blessed and so happy to be able to be with my family
and to be able to tell them, that I love them.

Today, tell someone you love, that you love them and why.

I’m off to the beach now and then to explore the city!

Happy Monday!

80’s Baby

I am an 80’s baby who grew up playing
street hockey until the street lights came on.
I used to buy 1 cent candies (true story) from the
convenient store up the street from my elementary school
after school and my biggest worry was whether
or not I could squeeze an extra ten minutes out with my friends.

Recess was filled with running competitions,
playing 21 or two touch football.
I lived fully in every moment of that time.
I legitimately had the best childhood

I got my first cellphone when I was 15? Maybe?
I remember still – it was the tiniest thing in the world,
literally the size of my palm and texting (the only thing I could do)
was the biggest deal in the world!
I once racked up a $500 phone bill …. all in text messages…
You can imagine my parents excitement at
letting me finally have a cell… 😐
Remember when each text cost 10-15 cents?
Yah!

A decade later (holy shit) a decade…
things are SO different!
My phone is with me, all day, every day and
it is literally an extension of me –
I’m not proud of this- it is what it is…

KARENMICHELLE || Islands

Being an 80’s baby means two things:

I was part of a world where phones didn’t
dictate my life and I was more concerned
with winning a race at recess
than I was at taking a photo of that race.

It also means that I am now too a part of the
online social media world that 90’s babies grew up on
– a world in which I am
completely and deeply embedded in.

KARENMICHELLE ||  Palm Trees Jamaica

These two juxtaposing realities became apparent
to me when I was in Jamaica with 12 of my
friends who I grew up with- 12 friends
who are too a part of both worlds.

They are however, of the former mentality.
They are not obsessed with social media nor have a
constant need to be on their phones…

Being away with them taught me more than they know.
I got lost in laughing, in talking about what we
would do if we won the lottery, and in playing games,
including the camping game
(a game that made me rack my brain!!! and no phone could help me)

This post is for them…

Happy Sunday

Sunday

KARENMICHELLE ||

My favourite day of the week;
I’ve been waiting patiently for its arrival.
At 8:30 this morning, I was at my favourite coffee place
Boxcar Social drinking my usual, large almond milk latte
and lucky for me, I had the whole patio to myself!
p.s if you have not been there, you have to check it out!

KARENMICHELLE ||

I am usually an early bird and happily so.
It’s Sunday and while everyone was still asleep or slowly
waking up, I was enjoying the most delicious coffee
in what felt like a back patio that reminded me of a place
I visited in Paris. I love Sunday mornings.

After coffee, I headed north to my god fathers farm for his
surprise birthday party.

KARENMICHELLE ||

I have not been up here in a long time but I am
so super excited to finally be here because
a) there are about 30 family members
I have not seen in a long time and
b) because I just spent my afternoon
ATV’ing through 100 acres of land,
eating the most delicious foods, playing with my baby cousins
and of course spending time with the man of the day.

KARENMICHELLE ||

ICYDK (in case you didn’t know)
I am secretly a farm girl at heart;
I grew up camping and on family farms
picking fresh eggs out of the chicken coups
my whole life- this is like second nature and
to be able to leave the city to come here
and spend time with my crazy but amazing family
makes me extremely happy.

Back to ATV’ing I go!

Sometimes…

I know…

Ive been MIA!!!
but, In Action nonetheless.
I went to Las Vegas, Nevada
two weeks ago (for the 1st time)
for a much needed mother daughter trip!
I mean, I never thought I would enjoy Vegas as much as I
did with my mother but, it was amazing!
We stayed at the ARIA; everything was incredible

A lot has happened in the past few weeks…
So the trip couldn’t have happened at a better time.
You know those days or weeks where you don’t have any
pressing matters and then suddenly
life throws all these things your way at once?
Well, that is exactly what happened.

Now it’s time to pick up where I left off…
unfortunately that means the cold
But… before I get back to that let me show you
what I wore a saw in Vegas

One thing is for sure, the weather there was
wayyyyy better than it is here (Toronto)
I even got to lay by the pool one morning…
what I would give to have that back.

A girl can dream.. that and work hard
So that’s what Ive been doing since I’ve come back
Lots and lots of school work + exams + work

Work hard and play harder!

Nite!
